Close to my heart

I am ashamed that being a Kannadiga-Bangalorean myself, I did not write about an issue I am genuinely concerned about, all this while. It took someone who has just moved into Bangalore to bring out the plight of a local Kannadiga in Bangalore! And he has done a remarkable job!

Do read it here.

An excerpt(I simply couldn't resist putting it here!)--

"It’s probably the only city in India where the natives account for less that 30% of the population. It’s the only city where cinema theatres screen films in as many as five languages. It’s probably the only city where a person from another state can go about his business for years, without knowing a word of the local language.

And that seems to be a matter of concern for the Kannadiga. Every Kannadiga I’ve spoken to since my return to the city has wasted no time in reminding me how very few non-Kannadigas seem to make the effort to learn the local language. Why is it such a big deal? Are they fanatics? Not by any stretch of imagination! But they are concerned that while that city has provided opportunities to the outsider, the non-Kannadigas haven’t reciprocated by ‘blending’ in. Which to a great extent means learning the local language."

I have a few things to add. It's easy to point out the flaws in Bangalore (that have surfaced mainly due to the large number of people the IT industry has brought to the city). It's easy to curse auto-drivers and policemen and declare that they all treat localites and the others differently. It's easy to criticise the decision the Kannada film industry took to save itself. But, don't you all agree that it's also easy to live in this friendly city amongst the hospitable Kannadigas wihtout even knowing their tongue? Something that would be unthinkable in some other cities.

But, there's one way of reciprocating. For the goodwill shown and the hospitality endowed - learn the local language. So please, all non-Kannadigas reading this, make an effort to learn the language of the city you wish to make your home. Before putting German and French on the agenda, put Kannada on it. It's the least you can do.

Thanks Karthik, once again. :)

A) Thankfully, I know Kannada enough to understand what's going on, and can communicate.... but that's expected I guess. Have been here too long for the otherwise. It has never gone beyond the 'solpa gottha' because I do not speak it often. Would love to know more of the language.
B) It is a little disturbing at times to see some Kannada-speaking people mock my accent. Now i speak Hindi with an accent as well. neither are my mother tongue, you know.
c) I would insist that I have totally blended in with Bangalore. In my heart, this is as much my city as anybody else's.
And to the following:
It’s probably the only city in India where the natives account for less that 30% of the population. ...... It’s probably the only city where a person from another state can go about his business for years, without knowing a word of the local language,
all I can say is that Bombay and Calcutta have as much of an influx of non-marathi and non-bengali speakers. And that is historical. Delhi is a capital state and not associated with any state as such. A delhi-ite could be a punjoo, a UP-ite, a bihari, a bong, a tam, a kannadiga, or anybody for the matter. And anybody talking years? Generations and generations of Marwaris and gujaratis, and biharis and punjabis, with no knowledge whatsoever of Marathi or bengali, have stayed and prospered in Bombay and Calcutta. For the matter, Varadarajan Mudaliar set up an empire in the mumbai underworld with hardly any knowledge of Marathi. 70% of my classmates in La Martiniere, Calcutta and about 60% of them in St. Vincent's, Asansol, did not speak Bengali. Good? Bad? Ugly? I do not know. Just a fact.

Also, it would be absolutely brilliant if there are Kannada speaking courses available in the city. As i have mentioned, would love to pick up the language more. And that is the case with most new residents, you know. Who would not like to have the local language in their grasp? But then, everyone would expect the newcomer to pick the local language up by just speaking it. Now that is easy for a Teluguite, with their local language being similar to Kannada. Not with us. Bengali and Kannada are almost as different as bengali and french. And the locals would always walk only two paths. one being speaking in English or hindi, making it easy for the newcomer to understand and communicate, and never learn the local language.. and the other being speaking only in Kannada, thus alienating him entirely. For my five-and-a half year stay in Karnataka, the only time I actually picked some of the language was when I had a Kannadiga roommate for a year, who used to actually explain meanings of words to me. Just wonder, how great it would have been if Kannada speaking courses were to be available. One cannot pick up a language without a structured approach. Picking up a language is not as easy as picking up a handbag or a dumb-bell.

So there. A rather long post. Will blog about it sometime.... when I get a broadband connection :(

Shomo: You won't believe this, but you are one non-Bangalorean that gives me hope. Everytime I read that description in your blog, "..at home with chow-chow bath", I am relieved that there are people who have adopted this city as their home and don't just complain and compare it with their hometown all their life. And I have met and heard hundreds of non-bangaloreans with the exact opposite attitude, when I was working. That really was the cause of my concern.

After readign your comments, I did realise that this issue was not as simple as it seemed. There rae several aspects to be looked into. To address a few of them-

"It is a little disturbing at times to see some Kannada-speaking people mock my accent."
--- This is true and the only ones to blame for this are the Kannadigas themselves. More than the mockery, I have often heard people go, "Hey that's so cute", when people are speaking wrong Kannada instead of correcting them. The only solution is to initially speak the language with friends rather than with strangers or mere acquaintances.

"Also, it would be absolutely brilliant if there are Kannada speaking courses available in the city"
Agree 100%. We have Learn English all over the place, and Allaince and MaxMuller for French and German, but we hardly have any popular Kannada training institutes. But I do know of someone who taught Kannada on TV sometime ago, I will ask him if he has a Kannada training course as well. I really hope when I come back to Banglore I can do something about this.

"And the locals would always walk only two paths. one being speaking in English or hindi"
This, is the REAL problem and I am ashamed at this attitude of Kannadigas, who go out of their way to please the outsider even when the situation does not call for it.

As far as the situation is Bombay is concerned, I just don't want Bangalore to follow suit.

I know these responses are hardly satisfactory and the topic calls for a longer discussion, I hope we can do that when we meet. Also,I will write more on the issue in my subsequent posts.

Gowri said...

Murali: It is strange that non-kannadigas who have made Bangalore their home and love this city, should respond to this post! - You and shom.
When you talk of ur mom, and when I also see that my mother-in-law, who moved to Bangalore only after marriage has learnt Kannada and speaks very fluently, i cannot help but wonder if it is the local population currently that is to blame?
In those days, one had to learn Kannada to carry out one's daily activities. The situation is not the same anymore. If you were to visit JP Nagar and BTM layout, even Koramangala, you can see that it is a breeze to live in these places without knowing even a word of Kannada. Shopkeepers, veg vendors, maid servants all speak Hindi. When we were in JPNagar, we saw that all the domestic helps there were from the North East. This being the situation, why would a person conversant in Hindi, learn Kannada? Well, this only scares me...

Neel:

Neel, there is no reason you should not learn Kannada even if you do not stay here for long. Isn't it an advantage to know an extra language? You never know when it will come in handy. So do make use of the oppurtunity ur company has given its employees and start learning Kannada.

"Life is beautiful. Let us co-exist."
Indeed; but it would be even more beautiful if everyone in Bangalore would learn some kannada!

Oh just a few other things. The only city in the world that I can call mine is Bangalore. Apart from my small-town birthplace (which I have outgrown, cruel as it might sound), this is the city I have stayed in for the longest. I am a Bengali-Bangalorean, and mighty proud of both parts of that identity.

I totally agree with you Gowri... But its the same in almost all metro/cosmopolitan cities... You can hear/read about hue and cries about saving the local language all over...

But after staying out of Karnataka for two and half years, and when I came back to Bangalore - its a great feeling... to get to speak Kannada everywhere :)

And on the other side, there are lot of people who are non-Kannadigas and are showing a great interest in learning Kannada... Infact I'm teaching Kannada to 2 of my teammates :)

this was a real good post by gowri which i think is really relevant in blore and nowadays even in the culture capital, mysore where i have seen tamil and sundry other languages again trying to stamp out kannada as is their natural wont.
we kannadigas like fools are only too eager to please and i see that the day is not far in mysore where the tamilian and to an extent northindians totally take over and we will be made to look like fools with egg on our face.
we need to look inside ourselves and make it a point to converse ONLY IN KANNADA come what may to keep these wolves at bay.
for a start let us stop watching, praising and eulogising other language movies cause that is precisely where it all started in blore in the first place.
harsh though it may sound better stop talking to those who cant speak kannada and they will have no option but learn namma kasturi kannada.
let us act before it is too late.

Gowri....
I am a Bangalorean, and spent my life there. It is a city I love and cherish (and write about every now and then).

I'm not a kannadiga by birth (though consider myself to be an honorary one, and have relatives who are kannadiga (my bil for example)).

I speak, read and write Kannada fluently (atleast, fluently enough to regularly read kannada newspapers (Prajavani) when I'm visiting home in B'lore)

But that was partly because I (for some reason) always thought it is important that I know kannada (even when I was a kid). My mother also always said that it is important to know the language of the state you are in.

This lead me to appreciate a lot of kannada culture, and has served me well (especially when I read old dasa and veerasaiva kannada musical literature).

However, there are two sides to this coin.

I absolutely think it is important that people who come to Bangalore make an effort to learn kannada, and appreciate kannada culture. However, I am strongly against a chauvinistic display that says Karnataka is only for kannadigas, and every one else should go home (what we see the Sena doing in Mumbai, or Tamil groups doing in TN or other groups do elsewhere). It pains me when I see "outsiders" callous about the local language, and also when locals ostrasize "outsiders" (and sometimes even make them wonder if they are citizens of India) for not speaking the language.

I think i'll end this comment with a vachana of Basaveshvara in transliteration.

"ivanArava ivanArava ivanAravaneMdu enisadirayya.
iva nammava iva nammava, iva nammavaneMdu enisayya.
kUDala saMgamadEvA nimma maneya maganeMdu enisayya."

i have a full respect to soft speaking localities in bangalore. but i didnt like one point gowri. u cant force anybody to learn any language as u told to balaji.

Gowri said...

Deepu, I agree with you and thanks for appreciating the write-up.

Gowri said...

Hi Sunil, you know what Bangalore needs to save its language and culture? More people like you..

But Sunil, these days it is hard to find people with this kind of attitude. People understand that they stand to gain nothing by knowing the local language, since they seem to be getting on fine without knowing it, and remain that way.

There are two reasons you learnt the language as I see it. One being, your mother encouraged u to learn the language, which is commendable. And the second being you learnt it as part of ur curriculum. The problem now is that, young parents themselves show no interest in the local language and culture, so how can you expect them to advice their children? Moreover, these children are enrolled into CBSE and ICSE schools where learning the local language is not mandatory, after a cetain point at least; and so these kids grow up isolated from the local language and culture.

Localites turning hostile is not the solution, albeit inevitable after a point, people who plan to settle down in the city for good MUST take the initiative and learn the language if Kannada is to be saved in Bangalore.

Basavannana Vachana tumba chennagittu, schoolu college gnaapka bantu. Thanks for the very apt vachana Sunil.

Gowri said...

Anonymous: Exactly, that is why people themselves should take the initiative and learn it. I didn't mean to force him in my comment, I think it was more on the lines of request.

Sunil said...

I will agree to your comment...about schools.

I studied in ICSE, and kannada was my third language (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th standard only). But, I paid attention in class, and was reading kannada nicely by the time i was in 8th.......I was definitely the exception.

No one else cared.

I have a few reasons for this.

One is largely the fact that teaching of kannada is rather poor in almost all schools (including state board schools). If there's anything that can be done for someone to dislike a language, it is done in these classes. You cannot force someone to learn something that is taught badly, and makes you hate it. Make a language enjoyable, point out beautiful aspects, throw in some trivia and history, avoid being chauvinistic, and student WILL learn (i learnt that more recently, when I started learning sanskrit here in the states). But where do you find good teachers?

Second....make learning Kannada in schools mandatory. It should NOT be at the expense of primary education in English or what ever else (like some lame efforts of the government to make kannada the medium of instruction. That only pisses off people). That is the choice of the parent. But, enough studies have shown that teaching a kid 2 or 3 languages at a time doesn't hurt (i was speaking kannada long before i was taught it in school....).

The second is the absolutely terrible quality of kannada cinema. Quality cinema died in Kannada years ago....and now there is an attempt to mimic the big-budget tamil and telugu films. But that wont work if you only spend, and don't produce any (big budget) movie that's also quality. Tamil cinema was lucky, because even though there was a lot of crap, there was also Mani Rathnam and Kamal Hasan and a number of others, who continued to make quality cinema. Cinema plays a huge role in a language's popularity.

And, the fourth reason (i think) is that sensible people who care about the language aren't heard. The people heard are thugs, who go about causing bandhs and hoisting karnataka flags in the name of kannada. I bet they don't know who Kuvempu is. By their actions, they are most likely to cause non-kannada speakers to take a harder stance in avoiding the language (why should i do something i'm forced to do?)

Sunil said...

I'll add one more little aspect, often forgotten....(just because your post is so well written and touches upon a topic close to my own heart)..

Kannada is probably the only indian language where many of the finest modern writers in the language did not have kannada as their mother tongue. I can't think of any other Indian language literature where this has happened.

Masti Venkateswara Iyengar spoke Tamil, D.R Bendre spoke Marathi, and Girish Karnad speaks Konkani, and in all probability Shivaram Karanth was more comfortable in Tulu or Konkani. But, they encountered Kannada, came to love it, and wrote in it beautifully. Learning and loving a language cannot come from pushing it aggressively......but an atmosphere must be created where a person will encounter and learn the language naturally.

Gowri said...

Sunil: The points you raised are extremely relevant. I have always believed that movies, because of their reach and influence, have a great role to play in preserving and taking forward a language/society/culture. I will dedicate a whole post to this shortly. Another strange factor about most of our writers is that, many of them were English professors, who chose to write in Kannada.

It would have done a lot better if it had been marketed well. T.N. Seetharam was alreday a household name by then, all that movie needed was some coverage by the press. But that is the unfortunate thing with good Kannada movies alwa? I do beg to differ. In South India, the 3 biggest cities are all like this. In Hyderabad, you need not know Telugu to survive. English and Hindi/Urdu is fine. In Chennai, one doesn't need to know Tamil. In fact, many in Chennai don't learn Tamil, even if they are born and brought up. English is enough to survive. But it is good to bring in the local language, for any of these cities.

Kalyan said...

It has been 4 weeks in Bangalore and it seems its perfectly manageable to live, and not just survive, here without knowing Kannada.

I'm joining Kannada classes next month though.

It is important to know the local language of course. Give the new people sometime, they will learn some kannada. at the same time, i would like to point out that in all major cities, there is a major influx of the non lcal people. in mumbai where there are a lot of shettys, they harly can manage hindi, forget marathi. i would suggest that the kannada champions keep this in mind too.

BShaibe said...

I came across this blog looking for some way to learn Kannada and was fascinated by the dialogue. I am from Israel, have relocated here with my family about a month ago. I have lived in many places in the world and have always found that the only way to really understand what is going on around you is to learn the local language - whether in Paris, Palo Alto, or Tel Aviv. I must say Blore is a bit different in that it seems completely possible as well as acceptable to live here a complete life without speaking barley a word of Kannada. My inclination has been to start picking up the language and am enjoying it tremendously though the pronunciation is a challenge for me. So much you can learn about the culture just by learning even simple questions and answers are phrased. I think most of my colleagues (hi-techies from all over India) are some what amused at my attempts as it does not seem to be that common. I'm here such a short time I cannot judge this - possibly this is the way of modern-day India, possibly this is the way of India through the ages, I do not know but am eager to discover that as well. One last word, if you can suggest a good way to study the language, I would appreciate hearing.

Anonymous said...

the reason you should learn any language when you are in any respective state even though you are not planning to stay longer is

1) you take any indian language, they have rich pool of resources each with more than 1000 years of history. for exampls kannada(1200 yrs). just assume the work done for these many years, and you can easily make use of it.

2) learning any language by communicating with the people who know very well in day today life is easier than reading in the book.

so if you got opprtunity to stay in any state try to make use of it even though it is smaller duration.

hi, this is arun kumar... i m a tamilian..with all fears of anti-tamil backlash, tamils getting beaten up...even killed in bangalore, that iz what i read in news papers here, i landed in bangalore-right from my landing at airport till my office place, lunch.... outings i found that all knnadigas were soft and polite,i talked to them in tamil/english, they responded back in english.. my team mates many of them r kannadigas... i shared my fear with them..many laughed upon...i request media and others not to give/publish such news giving a bad opinion abt a particular language/ppl who speak that language.. my stay iz probably for another 6 months and i am slowing learning from my kannadiga frds..hope will start learning to speak the language soon... and other thing i found out, many kannadigas showed eagerness to communicate in either hindi/english .. many laughed at me when i said i wanted to speak kannadiga with them...if someone communicates /wishes to communicate in my mother tongue. i will be only more than eager to oblige but this tendency i found lacking in ,many kanndigas..
