“Maanasa Sarovara”, he says, in that golden voice. Pause. “Haadu. Haadtya?” Music. Four words and I have goosebumps.
I picture Srinath with his wide rimmed glasses, looking affectionately at his patient and beloved Padma Vaasanthi. The lady herself under the shade of a tree, joy and gratitude in her eyes, as she looks at the doctor who has given her a new lease of life. A bullock cart that rests innocently by the riverside and mother nature in all her glory; binding them all together.
The song comes alive as the two legends – S.P.B. and Vani Jayaram come together to render the most heart-warming melody that I have heard in all my life. Words fail me, as I try for the umpteenth time to capture in better words the emotions I go through when I listen to this song. I can only think of one. Happiness. A smile involuntarily adorns the lips when the duet begins and stays long after the song is over.
If music is a string and the words, beads; this song to me is the most beautiful string of beads.

Gosh...haven't had a chance to listen to namma kannada songs since a long time. Thanks for that..really transported me to those days when radio meant vividh bharati and such songs! Haalu Jenu is another number I can readily think of! Will those halycon days ever come back? Thank you for a wonderful post!
Yes....a whole lot of them. The 70s and 80s period was the golden era for the Kannada film Industry. Great directors like Puttanna Kanagal, actors like Dr.Raj, Vishnuvardhan, Ananth Nag, Shankar Nag...,souful music and meaningful lyrics came together to give us wonderful movies. They died a slow and silent death with the demise of stalwarts like Puttanna and Shankar Nag. Looking forward to a time when that glory will return; I hope not in vain.
oh gowri, makes me want to listen to those songs, right here, right now...
brings back so many memories
Mohan: GREAT GREAT list of song there murali. Will listen to all of them now :)
Savitha: Yes, all of them and sooo many more....what great compositions these were!!
Mohan: re: the list of songs...can I request you for the film names too? The search for even one song...i.e Noorondu Nenapu - i cant get through.....help!
Awesome response!!! I cannot beleive that so many of them still want to listen to old Kannada music!!! I always thought that nobody even cared about them anymore. Good to hear that so many are still interested!!!
Some of my favorite songs are from the movies "Banna", "Nagara Havu", " Halu Jenu" and so many others whose names I dont remember.
Raghu
Ravi, Mohan: I think I know the names of most of these movies.
Belli Modagalu,(Don't know),Bandhana,Geetha,Auto Raja(Shankar Nag & Gayatri),Avale Nanna Hendhti; in that order.
All songs in all these movies are great.
Mohan: Enjoyed your comments within brackets. "Not so heavy Malashri!!!!" wow!! That song is "Nanna Jeeva neenu, nanna baala jyothi neenu". Very touching song from Geetha that. :-))
Raghu: Yes, it is heartening to know that there are still some of us left who do not consider it "uncool" to listen to Kannada songs! Naagara Haavu had great songs, and what a movie it was!
Hi,
This is my first time in ur blog..pretty good one...
i came here hopping from a bunch of places...I saw ur comment on the karaikudi..article..probably an old article ....u said that stay in the US is a punishment of sorts for the Indian vegetarian...well not really..its all upto...how eager are u to mould things ur way..
http://www.asu.edu/clubs/srishti/vishu_photos1.html
check these photos out..we always have such food festivals....
:-))
Hi Vijaykumar,
That looked really yummy, south Indian food on a plantain leaf! When there is a large Indian community, one can arrange such feasts, but the easy access that one has to idli-dosa whenever one longs for one is obviously not there here, and understandably so. This I said was "punishment" to me. :-)
Maybe I should visit ASU when you guys are having your next feast!! I promise to help with the cooking, so, how do I get an invite? :-))
Gowri
Hey Lak,
Walkman / CD-man.. sure thing! :-)
Yep, a marvelous song and also a great movie...
I like the other song -- 'vEdaanti hELidanu...", but all songs in this movie are masterpiece...
Yes Prashant, agree with you. "vedaanthi helidanu" is very meaningful too.
